HISTORICAL
RECORD
1975
The year in which the Club was founded by a lively nucleus of friends of
motor sport. At first, under the name of the Serres Automobile Club,
it organised automobile races in which its members participated together
with competitors from all over Greece.
Soon, however, the club also extended a warm welcome to motorcycles, and
it was renamed the Serres Automobile and Motorcycle Club. As an
active club in every field it was to become an institution from the first
years after its foundation.
1976
The club has organised Rally competitions for the Northern Greece
Cup since 1976. In 1976 the first Moto Cross competition for the Panhellenic
Championship was organised, and attracted warm critical praise for
its excellent organisation, the number of participants and the large number
of motor-sport loving spectators that attended.
1979
The First Serres Rally was organised: this competition was to continue
to be held until
Since 1998 the Serres Automobile and Motorcycle Club has
organised motor races at the Serres Racetrack.
the 1980s
As well as its other activities (excursions and competitions), the Serres
Automobile and Motorcycle Club envisioned the construction of a racetrack.
Committees were set up, possible sites proposed and plans made, culminating
in a complete study for the construction of a racetrack at Aghia Varvara.
However, the times were different, other priorities existed and the ground
was not ripe for such a dream. The members of Serres Automobile and Motorcycle
Club refused to let the flame of the vision of a racetrack die down.
the 1990s
New members joined the Club, who with the help of the older members set
high targets in keeping with the Club's history: private offices,
electronic equipment for the organisation of competitions, the acquisition
of an ambulance and participation in activities of a social nature.
1991
From small beginnings, an Auto-Moto exhibition is started, which
develops into an institution for the city of Serres.
1992
For the first time the automobile exhibition takes place in Platia Eleftherias,
the city's central square.
1993
The Club makes a dynamic entrance into Enduro Motorcycle competitions,
and organises races for the Panhellenic Championship, receiving
high critical praise for the excellence of the organisation.
1994
The construction of the private Go-Kart track was commenced. The
track is one of the best in Europe, and serves at the same time as a park
for driving and traffic instruction. The completion of this project would
never have been possible without the support of Serres City Council. It
is now the venue for Panhellenic Championship Kart races.
1995
The Serres Automobile and Motorcycle Club organises the first official
Panhellenic competition for Classic motorcycles.
1997
The first ever Super Motard race in Greece is organised at the Go-Kart
track.
1998
The dream of a city is finally fulfilled. On the threshold of 2000 the
city of Serres joins the select club of European cities which boast racetracks
of international standard. The building of the racetrack constitutes an
innovative project with great potential to contribute to the development
of the modern city. The Serres Race track was formally opened with
the hosting of the Panhellenic Automobile Speed Championship, which
showed our city to be unique in Greece and the Balkans as having
a racetrack built according to international specifications. The City Council
and the Serres Automobile and Motorcycle Club collaborate in order that,
with the contributions of all of us, Serres can be shown to be a Panhellenic
and international meeting point for motor sport.
2002
Today, 27 years after its foundation, the Serres Automobile and Motorcycle
Club, an established institution for motor sport, not only in the Prefecture
of Serres but in the whole of Greece, aspires to fulfil the dreams
of its founders, and to widen them by attracting creative, ambitious and
dynamic young people.
