After passing
through the valley of Agion Anargiron, which is covered with trees
and rich in water, the visitors can go up to Lailias, 25 km to the
north-east of Serres, this pride of the inhabitants of Serres, situated
high up in the mountainous range of Vrontou with its forests associated
with many tales and stories and with its skiing center suitable for both
summer and winter tourism.
The road leading to
the skiing slope, runs through this wonderful forest which even though
covered with snow reminds the visitors that in the summer months it can
fascinate the walker, the sportsman, the cyclist, the mountain climber,
the camper. Lailias is a rare example of harmony between wild landscape
and admirable beauty; it is a place of aesthetic value and exceptional
natural beauty. The international walking paths E4 and E6 run through
Lailias Mountain.
In wintertime the
forest is invested with real alpine grandeur. On the northern side of Ali
Baba, the highest peak, amidst the beech-tree and fir-tree forest is the
skiing center, 1600m high and 27 km from Serres. It has a
main skiing slope 1000m long and 60m wide, which can be used by
700 people per hour while there is another smaller slope for beginners,
200m long.
At the beginning of
the slope skiing equipment can be hired and experienced instructors give
skiing lessons to beginners on the spot.
At the end of the
slope there is a nice modern chalet with a restaurant, a cafe, bedrooms
with central heating. There are beds for 80 people.
Each year skiing and
langlauf competitions, district championships, local and international
skiing competitions are held here. The skiing center is open to the public
on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays even on bank holidays.
The snowfall is good in this area, which lasts 3,5 to 4 months a year.
It is one of
the most remarkable skiing centers in Greece, which attracts many ski-lovers,
amateurs and sportsmen not only from Serres but from other prefectures,
too.
